Home Computer Services

Home computers can have a variety of issues that are not as frequently encountered in the business environment. In particular, home computers seem to be especially subject to infections by a variety of different kinds of unwanted software, including viruses (and worms), adware, spyware, trojans, and keyloggers (collectively referred to as "malware"). Each of these has the potential to not only cause performance of the system to be grindingly slow, but also to endanger information that would preferably be kept private, such as Internet browsing habits, bank account access information, and even all of the files on the system itself.

Unfortunately, computer manufacturers, software authors and Internet service providers have only recently begun to address this problem by providing "free" solutions - however, those free solutions are only a partial fix for the problem. Remember, no single software product is capable of providing comprehensive protection for all of the threats from the Internet.

NorthEast Codeworks provides computer services, including malware removal and system evaluation for recommended upgrades. While many technicians (especially those from the "big name" houses) always recommend "reloading" Windows on any system to clean out malware, this is not always the best solution for the computer owner. When you reload Windows, you must then spend hours reinstalling your applications, printer software, any other special software you had installed, as well as restoring your data files (documents, photographs) from your backup disks. (You DO make backups of your data files, don't you??). Also, people don't always keep their "reinstallation" disks, meaning they may have to purchase a new copy of Windows to be properly licensed. All in all, a major pain.

NorthEast Codeworks first makes every effort to clean malware out your system while preserving the rest of your applications and data. Only as a last resort will I recommend reloading Windows. My success rate is over 90%.

On another note, some systems that ran the original Windows XP cannot support Service Pack 2. When people install SP2, they find their system performance slowing enough to be inconvenient at least. Since SP2 uses more system resources, a quick assessment can determine whether a memory upgrade is required. Depending on the system, memory upgrades typically cost less than $100, and can result in a dramatic improvement in system performance.

If your system is running slow, or you are suffering from pop-up advertising, or other irritating issues, please call NorthEast Codeworks.  I do house calls; I typically turn systems around in a couple of days (unless waiting for parts); and I provide an estimate before I begin work. If my work is going to run over the estimate, I call you first for your approval.

Please give me a call, if you need computer help. See the Contact Us page for info.
